Located near Spokane, Washington our nursery is centered in an area of many interesting and diverse habitats. A few miles west of us is the sagebrush grasslands of the Columbia Basin with its wonderful range of dry climate plants, suitable for more xeric (dry) gardens. Our nursery is located where the grasslands meets the trees, and a wonderful mix of plants occurs. To the north of us are the mountains of the Selkirks and Northern Rockies, with various life zones from low mountaine to alpine. The pictures above represent plants from these three habitats areas. The Bitterroot grows in rocky soils in the Columbia Basin and makes a wonderful rock garden plant. Prairie Smoke grows in between the two in the open pine forest and makes an interesting and hardy garden plant. The Ginger grows in wet soils in the surrounding mountains and makes a great plant for shady moist sites.
Some of the plants we grow have not been in commercial production before, yet some, like kinnikinnik are very popular landscape plants. Since most of the plants we grow are new to gardens there is still much to be learned. We have grown all of these plants in our own landscaping and find there culture relatively easy, but just like any garden plant, they need an environment similar to their native habitat. For example, we grow the sage brush violet, Viola trinervata in our gardens here in Spokane. Their home is in the drier, rocky soils of the Columbia Basin. We just give them plenty of sun and dry soil and they do just fine. Many native plants do very well in gardens where they generally have better soils and less competition.
